Each year, the EUYO auditions in excess of 3000 musicians aged 14-24 across every single EU member state. Of these musicians, approximately 140 are selected to become members of the EUYO. There are, however, always a number of musicians who show exceptional talent but who need to further develop essential orchestral skills before we feel able to offer them a full place in the Orchestra.
The Summer School programme is designed to offer these musicians the opportunity to join the EUYO’s summer residency and to play in the first concert/s in that venue, before the Orchestra departs on tour, to benefit from the expert guidance and training of our tutors and conductors and to develop the necessary skills to audition successfully in the future.
There has been a Summer School programme in existence, linked to the EUYO residency for a number of years. This programme has already produced many players who have gone on to become full members of the Orchestra and have achieved noteable success. Examples include the French cellist Gautier Capuçon who now has a successful solo career and John Ryan, who holds the position of 3rd horn with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Programme
Each year approximately 8 musicians who have auditioned unsuccessfully for the EUYO but who show exceptional promise will be invited to join the EUYO Summer School. The Summer School will take place during the Orchestra’s Summer Tour residential rehearsal period, which is typically 18-20 days.
During this time the School members will take part in sectional and tutti EUYO rehearsals, chamber music sessions and master-classes focusing on audition technique, preparing excerpts and individual needs. The Summer School pupils will then have the opportunity to perform with the Orchestra in its first concert/s in the rehearsal residency. This will not only offer them the EUYO ‘professional development experience’, but provide them the opportunity to develop additional skills essential to becoming a professional musician, such as audition technique, to prepare them for auditions to study over seas and future professional orchestral posts.
